With piercing eyes and an unusually long beak, the Shoebill may appear fearsome at first glance.
And yet—there’s something about it that makes it impossible to look away.
The more you gaze at it, the more endearing it becomes—such is the mysterious charm of this bird.

When I first encountered a Shoebill, I was struck by its overwhelming presence—it was a moment that truly captivated my heart.

Today, these extraordinary birds face the threat of extinction.
Wanting to share their unique appeal with more people, I chose to depict the Shoebill in a style reminiscent of a classical Western portrait, emphasizing its quiet charm and dignity.

What thoughts might lie behind the Shoebill’s steady gaze as it looks straight at us?

[About the Artist: Tomoka Mishima]

In my atelier in Minoh, Osaka, I enshrine amulets from shrines I’ve visited or connected with on my travels. Surrounded by healing elements like natural stones, incense, plants, aromatherapy, and books, the space is filled only with things that soothe the soul.
At times, I quietly meditate to harmonize my surroundings and my mind, cherishing those moments that nurture a sense of comfort.
In this peaceful place, I create each piece with heartfelt inspiration drawn from the stillness around me.
